Get your own 'mini-me'
Thanks to smartphones, selfies (self-portraits) have never been more easier, nor more popular, even making it into Oxford Dictionaries' word of the year. And everyone's taking them, including Danish PM Helle Thorning-Schmdt, who snapped herself, Barack Obama and David Cameron at Nelson Mandela's memorial service.
However, you can go one better than Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat - now you can have the ultimate selfie: a three-dimensional shot of yourself.
So that's me standing on the desk. Or rather, it's a 3D 'print' of me.
It's a little ceramic statuette, and you can get your own from Asda. For just £40. That's very reasonable for a 3D printing service.
The 3D printed items I've seen so far were made of plastic, so when Asda showed me their new 3D printing service, I was mightily impressed to see mini versions of the staff made in ceramic material.
You pick a pose you can hold for around two minutes, while the photographer walks around you wielding the special camera. The shape is recreated in 3D form by spraying ceramic fluid in extremely thin layers to build up a solid object. Figures will be printed and ready to pick up in time for shoppers next weekly shop.
The model is printed out from the scanned images, and has a slightly rough-textured matt finish. And I must confess it's a little spooky to see a 3D model of myself. It really looks like me, and the detail is amazing, down to my watch and rings.
You can have a 3D print done of anything up to the size of a car at Asda. So you could get 3D prints of your children - a great gift for grandparents - or your dog (if you can get it to stay still).
Asda say that among the prints that have been done so far are: a soldier getting a scan done for his family before being sent to Afghanistan so that he can be 'home for Christmas', an 83-year-old man had one done for his wife who's in a care home so that he can be with her all the time, a bride scanned in her wedding dress with her arms held out so that her husband can have her on his desk as a pen holder.
The service has been launched in York, and is to be offered nationwide. Visit www.asda-photo.co.uk for more information or to locate your nearest 3D printing store. Watch their 3D printing video here.
