Knit a plate of cakes

A plate of deliciously squashy cakes which won't ruin your diet! Knit one up for fun and send it to a dieting friend or make up a whole plateful if you're feeling creative. Children will enjoy using up scraps of wool for these simple designs - a fun idea for starter knitters as they'll see the finished result in a couple of evenings.

 

Materials

a selection of 4-ply yarns in colours as given for individual cakes

pair of 23/4mm/no12 needles

cable needle

foam blocks, sizes as given (DIY and specialist foam shops)

modelling clay (Das Pronto, from art and hobby shops)

paints, varnish and fabric glue

 

Abbreviations

alt: alternate; C6B: cable 6 back. slip next sts to cable needle and hold at back, K3, K3 from cable needle; C6F: cable 6 front, at front; dec: decrease; foll: following; g-st: garter stitch (every row knit); inc: increase; K: knit; P: purl; patt: pattern; rem: remaining; rep: repeat; RS: right side; st(s): stich(es); st-st: stocking stitch; WS: wrong side

 

WAFFLE

Materials: 4-ply yarn in pale yellow and red; foam: 8x7cm rectangle, 2cm thick

 

Front and back

(Both alike.) Using two strands of yellow, cast on 24 sts.

Next row: (RS) P.

Next row: (WS) K. Work in patt as folls:

1st row: P2, *K2, P1 rep from * to lst st, P!.

2nd row: K2, *P2

3rd row: as 1st row.

4th row: K. These 4 rows form the patt and are repeated 5 more times.

Next row: P. Cast off.

JAM

Using two strands of red, cast on 70 sts. Work 4 rows in st-st, then cast off.

TO MAKE UP WAFFLE

join short ends of jam together (purl side is RS) and fit around foam. Sew on the front and back to jam, around all edges.

 

FRUIT CAKE

Materials: 4-ply yarn in pale yellow, mid brown, beige and dark brown; foam - 9x10cm rectangle, 2cm thick.

FRONT AND BACK

(Both alike.) Using yellow, cast on 25 sts. Work 6cm in st-st. Inc 1 st at erach end of next row. Work 3 rows, inc 1 st at each end of next row. 29 sts. Cont in st-st until piece measures 10cm. Cast off.

 

SIDE PIECE

(Make 1.) using mid brown, cast on 92 sts. Work 2cm in st-st. Cast off.

 

TO MAKE UP

Trim foam to resemble a slice of bread. Place front and back pieces on either side of foam, sew side piece to front and back. Join short ends of side piece. Embroider currants and raisins to front and back using Swiss darning and embroider the top with bullion knots.

 

CHOCOLATE SWISS ROLL

Materials: 4-ply yarn in dark brown and white; foam - 9cm cicrle, 2cm thick.

 

FRONT AND BACK

(Both alike.) Using two strands of yarn throughout, cast on 12 sts in daerk brown. Work from chart in st-st, inc 1 st at each end of 2nd and fo0ll alt rows until there are 20 sts, work 10 rows, dec 1 st at each end of next and foll alt rows until 12 sts rem. Work one row, cast off.

 

SIDE PIECE

(Make 1.) Using adark brown, cast onj 70 sts. Work 2cm in st-st. Cast off.

 

TO MAKE UP

Join short ends of side piece. Sew front to sidd around edge. Fit foam in place. Sew back to side.

 

CHOCOLATE ECLAIR

Materials: 4-ply yarn in cream; Das Pronto; mid brown and dark brown paint, varnish; foam - 2x7cm piece, 2cm thick. Glue.

 

CHOUX PASTRY

Using Das Pronto modelling clay, make 2 eclair shape, 8cm long. Dry. Paint and varnish.

 

CREAM FILLING

Using cream yarn, cast on 11 sts and work cable patt as folls:

1st row: (RS) P1, K9, P1.

2nd and every WS row: K1, P9, K1.

3rd row: (RS) P1C6F, K3, P1.

5th row: as 1st row.

7th row: P1, K3, C6B, P1.

8th row: as 2nd row. These 8 rows form teh cable opatt and are repeated until work masures 19cm. Cast off.

 

TO MAKE UP

Stick small piece of foam between choux pastries. Place cream filling aroudn middle of eclair and john short ends.

 

BATTENBURG CAKE

Materials: 4-ply yarn in pale pink, pale yellow, beige and white; foam - 7cm square, 2.5cm thick.

 

MAIN PART

(Make 2.) Using pink, cast on 10 sts, using yellow, cast on 10 sts.

1st row: (RS) K10 yellow, twist yarns, K10 pink. Cnt in g-st for 16 rows, working in the correct colour and twisting yarns between colours.

Next row: (WS) P in correct colour.

Next row: (RS) K10 pink, K10 yellow. Cont in g-st for 15 rows in correct coour. Cast off.

 

SIDE

(Make 1.) Using beige, cast on 66 sts. Work in st-st for 2.5cm. Cast off.

 

TO MAKE UP

Join short ends of side piece. Sew one end main piece to side piece, fit foam in place, sew 2nd main piece to side piece. Using white yarn, embroider chain stitch between coloured squares, making a cross ion centre of cke. Work chain stitch in beige around edge of main and side parts.
