Ensure that Santa knows exactly whose stocking he’s filling with gifts by adding a fabric initial to a handmade design.

You will need:

● 1 metre thick cotton fabric plus 50cm in another colour for the cuff
● sewing machine
● ribbon
● fabric remnants for the letters

Print off the stocking template below, enlarging by 600% on a photocopier to get the correct size (49cm top to bottom). Using the template, cut two main stocking pieces. Cut one cuff piece measuring 49cm x 35cm.

Place stocking pieces right sides together and stitch a 1cm seam all the way around, except for the top edge. Turn the right way out.

Lay the cuff section right side up. Fold in half widthways and stitch a 1cm seam along this edge. Press the seam open.

Fold the cuff in half lengthways, matching the raw edges at the bottom. Press the top fold flat.

Make a loop out of ribbon or fabric and pin it to the top of the back seam on the inside of the main stocking.

Take the cuff section and match the raw edges to the raw edges on the top of the stocking, and pin in place. This will go over the pinned-on loop as well. Stitch a 1cm flat seam all the way around to join the cuff and the main stocking. This will also fix the ribbon loop in place.

Turn the cuff down right side out over the stocking, keeping the seam inside and about 2.5cm down from the top edge.

Finally decorate your stocking using ribbons and cut-out letters, which can either be stitched in place or stuck on using a fabric adhesive.
